centimeters
Commonly 5–15% extra for compaction and uneven ground.
Typical gravel density is 1.5–1.7 tonnes per cubic meter.

Enter area size and depth to estimate gravel volume and weight.

This is an approximate calculation. Always check with your supplier which density and delivery unit (tonnes, cubic yards, etc.) they use.

Standard Gravel Depth Guidelines

  • Paths & walkways: 50–75 mm
  • Driveways: 100–150 mm
  • Drainage layers: 150–200 mm

Example

Driveway: 6m × 3m with depth 0.1m

Volume = 6 × 3 × 0.1 = 1.8 m³

If gravel density is ~1.6 tons per m³:
1.8 × 1.6 = 2.88 tons required

Gravel Density

Most gravel types range between 1.5–1.8 tons per m³, depending on:

  • stone type
  • moisture level
  • compaction rate

Tips Before Ordering Gravel

  • Consider compaction: final level settles lower
  • Add 5–10% extra for delivery loss or leveling
  • Ensure weed membrane beneath for clean finish
  • Avoid spreading in heavy rain; water bloats weight

Gravel Types

  • Pea gravel: smooth, decorative
  • Crushed gravel: structural, driveways
  • River rock: larger, landscaping
  • Limestone/granite: compact well, ideal load-bearing

FAQs

How accurate is gravel volume estimation?
It provides standard density-based calculation and is generally accurate for most DIY uses.

Can I convert m³ to tons?
Yes, the live calculator will show both.

Should I add sand beneath gravel?
For driveways or paths, a compacted base layer is recommended.
